In 1948, Pakistan had attacked kashmir and captured Drass, Kargil and most important Zojilla Pass which was a sole route towards Kargil and Leh of Ladakh area. General Thimmayya assigned Lt. Col. Rajinder Singh the task of clearing the passage from enemies. This was named operation BISON. He did the impossible task of guiding his 7th cavalry regiment comprising of stuart tanks on 11,500 ft. Nobody in world had done this before at such an high altitude. The enemy was utterly surprised to see tanks at such great heights at -20°C and fled away. Thus the Zojilla pass was cleared and enemy was not allowed to take Ladakh. After this battle, he was nicknamed Lt. Col. Sparrow.

In 1965, he was instrumental in thwarting the pakistani attack on India in Akhnoor, Jammu. Pakistanese had come with US patton tanks, one of the best tanks of the world in those times. This ensured in one of the greatest tank battles the world had ever seen since world war 2. Known as graveyard of pakistani tanks, as many as 69 pakistani tanks were destroyed against 9 Indian tanks in phillauri battle. Pakistanese were beaten badly.
He received 2 Maha Vir Charkas for both feats.
